GRLevel3 version 1.70 is released. It contains the following changes:
1) Support for the new high resolution Base Reflectivity (HR-BR) and Base Velocity (HR-BV) 2) Conversion of high res Base Velocity into high resolution Storm Relative Velocity (HR-SRV) 3) Support for Storm Relative Velocity color tables 4) New default reflectivity color table, suitable for the new HR-BR 5) Support for large background images on limited graphics hardware 6) Removed distinction between legacy Storm Total Rainfall and Digital Storm Precipitation 7) Force download of placefile components The new HR-BR and HR-BV products have several significant improvements over their legacy L3 counterparts: a) The data value resolution has increased from 16 levels to 256 levels b) HR-BR's range has increased from 230 to 460 km c) HR-BV's bins went from 1km down to 250m These are the equivalent to the legacy Level II versions of these products. Right now, only the Central, Western, and Alaska regions output this high resolution L3 data. In addition, only the lowest tilt of BR and BV are supported in high res. In order to see HR-SRV, you must have both BV and SRV set to download in GRLevel3. See owners forum for the update |

Uploaded GRLevel3 version 1.72. It contains the following changes:
1) Added support for high-res data from the Eastern region Exit all running instances of GRLevel3 then run the updater. Couple of additional notes: a) This version (and 1.71 before it) uses FTP to list directories on the public NWS server. Let me know if you run into trouble when you click the "Start Archiver" button. It should be significantly faster than in the past. b) Here's a list of "slacker" sites that aren't sending out HR-BR/BV: Code:

Uploaded GRLevel3 version 1.77. It contains the following change:
1) Added flag to tell proxies to not intercept http requests from GR3 GR3 1.77 sets a flag in the http request that tells web proxies and caches to pass along the request to the public NWS server. Whether the proxy/cache software honors that flag is another matter. Hopefully, they will and those mobile users that have encountered data update problem will be in good shape. The ultimate solution is for the NWS server to stop setting "Cache-Control:" in its http response. That line tells caches/proxies that the data won't change for 86,400 seconds (one day) when it really changes every 4.5, 5, 6, or 10 minutes, depending on the VCP. I've contacted the NWS server folks about this issue but have yet to receive a reply. |
